The 119th GRIPS Forum”Leaders That are There for People: Everything Begins with Empathy and Trust”

At the 119th GRIPS Forum on December 14, 2015, Ms. Fumiko Hayashi, the Mayor of the City of Yokohama gave a lecture titled “Leaders That are There for People: Everything Begins with Empathy and Trust”.



Abstract

Organizations produce significant results when its leader motivates the staff and maximizes their leverage to help the staff feel happy and growing on the job.

With “it all comes down to people” and “management with empathy and trust” as her philosophy, Ms. Hayashi became the top performing salesperson in the company. Based on her recent experience as accomplished corporate executive and the head of the largest municipality in Japan, Mayor Hayashi will speak about the type of leadership what is critical in leadership in order to carve out a path to a new era.

Speakers’ Profile:

Fumiko Hayashi is the Mayor of the City of Yokohama. She was elected as the first woman Mayor of Yokohama in 2009, and reelected in August 2013. Before assuming office as Mayor, she had an extensive career in the business world. Among her career since 1965, she found her niche in the occupation of car sales by entering Honda Cars Yokohama, Inc. in 1977, and became the top-sales person in the company. She served as President of BMW Tokyo, Corp., Chairperson and CEO of The Daiei, Inc., and Operating Officer of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. In 2004, she was selected as one of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL’s “The 50 Women to Watch” and received the “ACCJ 2014 Person of the Year” by The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan.
