Abstract:

This lecture will clarify economic and political characteristics of the emerging-economy countries (EeCs) and discuss what kind of challenges their advent poses to Japan. Profound changes in the distribution of economic and military power in the world have heightened the risk of decoupling the global economy. They also have strengthened the political/military surge of the statist-unilateralist trend, diametrically opposite to liberal internationalism that Japan endorses as principles governing the world. To cope with these challenges, Japan needs to seriously consider how to use its limited resources to reach out to and develop closer ties with the EeCs.
