1. Background

The ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) was adopted at the ASEAN Summit in June 2019, and the adoption of the AOIP was noted by the ASEAN Dialogue Partners at the East Asia At the Summit in November 2019. Since the late 2010s, ASEAN Dialogue Partners, including Japan, have also presented their vision on the future cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. In the midst of heightened international tensions, there is an urgent need to promote cooperation to realize peace and prosperity in the region.

?

In order to discuss materialization of the regional cooperation, the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), in cooperation with Indonesia CSIS and Singapore RSIS, will hold an international conference under the theme “Toward an Open and Inclusive Regionalism” with the participation of universities and research institutions from the countries participating in the East Asia.

?

2. Objectives

Based on the Policy Research Network on Contemporary Southeast Asia (PRN-SEA), which is a research network of universities and research institutes in Southeast Asia and Japan, a conference will be held among Japan, ASEAN, and other ASEAN dialogue partners.

?

In this conference, they will exchange views on cooperation on open and inclusive regionalism and recent security crises in Europe and Asia, and discuss concrete ways of cooperation in maritime cooperation, connectivity, SDGs, and other economic cooperation in line with AOIP’s focus areas.
