GRIPS STUDENTS’ CONFERENCE 2012 “Tackling Political, Social, and Economic Challenges for Emerging Economies”

Conference Description

On September 4, 2012, the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) will host a student conference. Our theme for this year is “Tackling Political, Social, and Economic Challenges for Emerging Economies.” The first of its kind at GRIPS, the conference aims to provide an opportunity for a diverse group of students, researchers, and professionals from various disciplines and cultural backgrounds to share ideas and research on the current political, social, and economic challenges facing emerging economies of the world and how these challenges can be addressed for sustainable development. The conference is open to all GRIPS and non-GRIPS graduate students, researchers, and professionals wishing to present their research or just attend the conference. Participation is free of charge.

The conference will feature a keynote speech by GRIPS’ President Professor Takashi Shiraishi, presentations of high-quality policy papers by students representing different programs at GRIPS, and presentations by various student scholars in Japan and abroad on their research in political science, social policy, and economics.

Conference Objectives

The conference aims to provide an opportunity for student scholars, researchers, and professionals to:

    • discuss research strategies and agendas for addressing various political, social, and economic challenges facing emerging economies;
    • explore the challenges facing emerging economies and discuss possible solutions;
    • present academic work and receive comments from peers;
    • contribute to the scholarship on emerging economies by setting new research directions and encouraging rigorous disciplinary research;
    • network and interact with peers from a variety of policy areas.

Conference Topics

We invite both quantitative and qualitative papers on any issue in economics, political science, and social policy that is relevant to the conference theme. Below are some broad areas in which we invite presentations.

    • Public administration and governance
    • International relations
    • Traditional and non-traditional security
    • International political economy
    • Democratization

    • Gender and development
    • Policy design and implementation
    • Public policy

We particularly welcome papers from graduate student scholars seeking to contribute to the quality and direction of research on the challenges facing emerging economies. Presenters will have 20 to 25 minutes to present and answer questions. Presenters are encouraged to use PowerPoint. The official language of the conference is English.

Guidelines for Abstract Submission

Submit an abstract of 200-500 words by Monday, August 20, 2012. All abstracts must include a title, author(s)’ name(s), affiliation, and e-mail, and 3-5 keywords. The abstract should describe the theme of the paper, the theory and research method used, and a summary of main conclusions.
